Why is this a recipe for a large family?

This sweet and creamy protein-filled oatmeal recipe for large families was created to provide a quick, easy, and filling breakfast for a crowd. As a mom of seven children, I struggle to find from scratch recipes with measurements ready for my large family. I also tend to adapt or change recipes altogether to make them healthy, from scratch, use ingredients I have on hand, or fill them with protein to keep my growing children full. This sweet and creamy protein-filled oatmeal recipe checks all of those boxes and more! So, I’ve decided to start sharing more of our recipes for other large families that have similar challenges!

This recipe will make about 8 servings, or more, depending on the size of bowls you serve. If you find that you need more or less oatmeal for your family, keep the ratio of oats to water to milk a 1:1:1. Or you can just use one type of liquid and keep the ratio of oats to liquid 1:2. Then, adjust the rest of the ingredients according to taste.

Why will your family love this protein-filled oatmeal recipe for large families?

This protein-filled oatmeal recipe for large families is sweet and creamy making it a delicious, cozy morning breakfast. For homesteading families, this recipe uses up a few fresh eggs changing a typical bowl of oatmeal into a well-balanced and filling breakfast.

This recipe is also a mom favorite because it is quick and easy, and can be made all in one pot with little effort! I get this started on the stove and while its cooking we are able to start homeschool with Bible time devotionals and prayer.

Another reason your family will love this oatmeal recipe is because there are several ways to customize each bowl with toppings. This means every member of the family can put whatever toppings they choose in their bowl, or they have a delicious and filling bowl of oatmeal even if they don’t add anything at all. Toppings can include fruits, nuts, nut butter, creams, and more. We will list specific ideas below!

Why should you prepare oats before using them in a recipe?

Now, this is not a necessary step, and I definitely do not always do this because I do not usually decide beforehand that I will cook oatmeal. And that’s totally okay! But, I like to share this good practice because it will result in oats that will be easier to digest, cook better, and even gives a texture that is softer and creamier.

Let’s go over how those things happen. Soaking the oats helps break down something called phytic acid. Phytic acid can disrupt our body’s ability to absorb minerals. Another benefit of soaking the oats is that it activates enzymes that help the oats digest better in our bodies. Also, the oats cook better because they are starting at a softer texture and then have the ability to get more tender and creamy during the cooking process. But again, preparing the oats is up to you and your preference!

How to prepare oats properly for oat recipes?

    Steps for preparing oats:

    1. Use cold, filtered water to rinse oats clean.
    2. Put the rinsed oats in a bowl with filtered water with the liquid amount equaling two times the amount of oats. (For example, 3 cups of oats need to soak in about 6 cups of liquid.)
    3. Cover the oats and let them soak at room temperature overnight and they will be ready to use in the morning! (Soak for a minimum 6 hours)

NOTE: Now, please note that if you soak oats before using this recipe, you may need to use less liquid. I suggest starting with a little less liquid than the recipe states, adding the rest of the liquid if necessary, and cook until your desired consistency. If you are NOT going to soak the oats overnight, then you should follow the recipe as it is and still find a nice creamy oatmeal result.

How to Make this Sweet and Creamy Protein-filled Oatmeal for a Large Family

This recipe is incredibly easy to make! The actual recipe card with the full ingredients list is down below. But here is the basic way this recipe is made.

Optional Prep: Prepare oats the night before according to the steps above.

    1. Put all the ingredients into a large pot and heat it to a low to medium boil.
    2. Once it begins to boil, lower the heat and let it simmer until it is cooked to your desired consistency and texture, which is approximately 8-10 minutes. It is cooked well when the liquid is absorbed into the oatmeal and the oatmeal looks fluffy with a creamy texture.
    3. Turn off the heat and serve immediately into bowls.
    4. Optional: Top oatmeal with each person’s choice of toppings!

    • 3 Cups Water
    • 3 Cups Milk any
    • 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
    • 1 Tbsp Vanilla Extract
    • 1-2 Tbsp Raw Honey
    • 2 tsp Cinnamon or desired amount
    • 2-3 Farm Fresh Eggs optional, but for creaminess and protein
    • Toppings optional

    Instructions

    • Put all the ingredients into a large pot and heat it to a low to medium boil.
    • Once it begins to boil, lower the heat and let it simmer until it is cooked to your desired consistency and texture. Approximately 8-10 minutes. (It is cooked well when the liquid is absorbed into the oatmeal and the oatmeal looks fluffy with a creamy texture.)

    • Optional: Top oatmeal with each person's choice of toppings!

    Notes

-Remember that soaking oats overnight beforehand is optional. And if you do soak them, you may need less liquid than the recipe states. Start with a little less and add as needed to reach your desired consistency.
-Toppings are optional. This oatmeal tastes great how it is!
-You can use only milk or water as the liquid. Just make sure your ratio of liquid to oats is 2:1. (For example, 6 cups of liquid to 3 cups of oats.
    Substitutes:
-scoops of protein powder or collagen can replace eggs
-any milk choice will work, but you may need to adjust to less liquid for thinner milks
-rolled oats or old-fashioned work best, but any will do
-you can substitute or adjust any of the sweeteners or combination of sweeteners in this recipe to your taste
Keyword breakfast oatmeal, creamy oatmeal, oatmeal, oatmeal for a large family, protein-filled oatmeal

    Substitutes

Any type of oats will do. We choose to use organic rolled oats, but you can use rolled oats, old-fashioned, or even steel cut. Steel cut does not make as soft and creamy of a texture, but it still works fine.

Farm fresh eggs do not have to be used in this recipe, but it is highly recommended for the protein, vitamins, and creamy texture. You can instead use 1-2 scoops of your favorite protein or collage powder.

Any milk will work for oatmeal, but the thicker the milk, the creamier the texture. If you substitute with a thin milk like almond or oat, the recipe may need less liquid.

Obviously, any sweetener and combination of sweeteners can be used to your own taste. Read about why we choose raw honey over processed honey here. We played around with sweeteners and combinations of them many times before settling on this combination and amount as our family’s favorite. You can make it your own!

    Suggested Toppings

Toppings can include fruits, nuts, nut butter, creams, and more. Some ideas are:

    • berries (strawberries, cherries, blueberries, raspberries, etc)
    • other fruits (banana slices, kiwi slices, peach slices, mango slices, etc)
    • nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans, peanuts, etc)
    • nut butters (peanut butter, almond butter, etc)
    • seeds (chia, poppy, etc)
    • cream (raw milk cream, coconut cream, etc)
