    Hi, I’m Priscilla!

As a young, growing family facing job loss in 2013, with a toddler and a newborn baby, I wanted to learn how to grow food to supplement our rising grocery bill, but I had no experience. So, I called on my mom to help me start my first garden as cheap as possible. I remember her stewarding a small garden from time to time when I was growing up. We started one with blocks, soil, seeds, and a few starters that she helped me invest in. And that’s how I started!

Before I was a homesteading, homeschooling mom I was a professional musician and music teacher. I carried over my teaching experience into homeschooling my children, but I learned it was much different teaching your own children. And, when I started homesteading, I started with NO experience. It was something I never imagined doing. I had to do a lot of researching and learning each season. So, I know how hard it is to start homeschooling and homesteading with no experience!

    After 2020

After the events of 2020, we saw the vital need to learn to grow, raise, and store real God-given food in abundance, and continue homeschooling all of our children. We felt God had a new call and season for us. So in 2021, we left everything behind, and moved from northwest Indiana to southern Georgia. And we just got started!

    How we can help you

Now, I’ve homeschooled for 11 years and have 6 children of homeschool age with 1 more in waiting. And, we established our homestead in 2021 with lots of research and no experience. We built up gardens and livestock and had a small farmstead business within 2 years. We stewarded a small farmstead by selling fresh eggs and healthy chickens to many happy customers!

Also, we started taking and completing several homesteading courses, and we continue our education every year. And, I’m always looking for ways to make things more time efficient by making them simpler to do and sustainable. When things are simpler, they are more sustainable in our already full lives.

But, an unexpected turn of events landed us in a rental home in an HOA neighborhood while we search for land. We proved to ourselves that we could still homestead even with all the restrictions. We knew if we could do it, others could do it too! So, we started this blog and our newsletter to equip modern families to live abundantly in their homesteads and homeschools no matter where they live and with no overwhelm or burn out. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! We offer simple and affordable solutions, free printables, resources, and encouragement for your Christ-centered beginner homesteading, homeschooling journey.

    Why create a Christ-centered homestead?

Create a Christ-centered homestead to glorify God and to have a more abundant, thriving homestead and life. Here are a few resources for getting started. If you are a Christ-follower, then you know how important it is to keep Christ and God’s ways at the center of everything we do in our lives. And one thing I know firsthand is that when I try to do anything without God, I usually fail. The deep purposes I hold in creating a homestead in the first place are too valuable to me to attempt in my own strength and limited knowledge. I need my Father.

    7 Ways to Create a Christ-centered Homestead

    1. Put God first

As Christ-followers we are to carry our crosses and be the hands and feet of Jesus to the world. So, how can we do that well if we aren’t spending time with Him each morning? We should meet with Him each morning to be filled by Him as our daily bread and refreshed by Him as our living water.

However, putting God first is not just limited to meeting with Him first thing in the morning. We are going to list many ways to create a Christ-centered Homestead and cultivate it well. Even so, this is not an extensive list, and we are only going to focus on 7 ways to create a Christ-centered homestead.

Here are things that we can do throughout our days that keep God first in our lives and help create a Christ-centered homestead:

    • Commit to meeting with God each morning through prayer and reading the Bible
    • Read the Bible any time of day
    • Pray all day! While doing homestead chores, house chores, homeschool, cooking, etc
    • Facilitate family worship times
    • Commit to personal worship times
    • Pray about decisions large and small
    • Commit to submit to God’s leading and His will
    • Submit to God’s ways
    • Carry yourself with a grateful attitude
    • Honor God by being disciplined and working hard as unto Him
    • Steward all of the people and things that God has given you
    • Give glory to God when things succeed or go well
    • Pray for protection and provision
    • Observe the wonders God created in nature with your children and instill in them an appreciation and the value of stewarding
    • Model these things to your children
    Matthew 6:33

When we create a Christ-centered homestead, this scripture is very comforting. No matter if your homesteading goal is to be totally off-grid producing everything you need, or to help supplement your grocery bill, or to add real food to your family’s diet, it is good to know that we don’t really have to be “self” sufficient because we have God.

What are other things you can think of that help you and your family keep God first in your lives?

    2. Dedicate your homestead to God

This is a simple, self-explanatory one. Dedicate your homestead to God. Dedicate the work of your hands, the planning, the ideas, and the fruit of your labor all to God. Dedicating your homestead to God and continuing to include Him in all of it is the very thing that will make it abundant.

It’s not to say that things still won’t fail sometimes. You might over-ferment your sourdough, the weather may be too hot and wilt and kill some of your crops, you may accidentally over-water in a hot season, your animal may get sick…

Things still happen which is all part of life on this side of heaven.

But, we can still choose to dedicate our homestead, and everything in it, to God and He will guide you.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6" photo/quote credit theabundantlivingfarm.com

    3. Pray about decisions and choices

Another way to create a Christ-centered homestead is to always pray about decisions and choices for your homestead and family. This may seem obvious, but have you ever thought about asking God what you should grow this season? Or, what animal to learn to raise next?

Along with the homestead dream can come many ideas of what we “should” grow and raise. But, there are many things to consider like climate, difficulty level, experience, need, cost, space, etc. The great thing is that God knows all! So, He has all of the answers already and we can go to Him and trust that He will guide us to make the choices and decisions that are best for us. He also can lead you to the resources and research you need to help you make a good decision.

Another area to consider praying about consistently is how to create an income from and/or for your homestead. Should you start a blog, a YouTube channel, or a podcast on your adventure or an area of expertise? Or, should you use what you grow to create physical products to sell? God knows what you and your family should do. He knows your logo, brand name, and everything else. Just ask!

Just as dedicating your homestead to God helps it thrive, praying and asking God what decisions to make will help you succeed.

    4. Be disciplined and work to steward what God gave you

You can put God first, dedicate your homestead to God, and pray about all of your decisions. However, you and your homestead can still fall short if you and your family are not disciplined in working to steward what God has given all of you. Our families need to be stewarded well with love, respect, education, health, real food, warmth, etc. Moreover, this can apply to gardens and animals.

Maybe you don’t have a lot of land, but you have space for a raised garden bed and maybe a beehive. Do whatever you can with what God gave you! Use your space to its maximum potential! Pray and ask God how you can do that. Or, maybe you have lots of space for animals.

For example, if God led you to raise egg-laying chickens to provide for your family it does no good if your family isn’t disciplined to feed and give them water each day. The blessing isn’t a blessing if the eggs are unhealthy because the hens were uncared for. If they get sick from dirty water or dirty nesting boxes that’s certainly not an ideal situation. Read more about basic chicken care here.

Again, things still happen, even with great care. But, we have the best chance of a thriving, abundant homestead centered around Christ when we are disciplined to work and steward all that God has given us.

    5. Be grateful

This sounds like a simple step. Be grateful. However, have you ever found yourself discontent because you want more of something? Or, maybe you think you just aren’t good enough at what it is you want to do, or what God is calling you to do. Discontentment and discouragement can sometimes be linked to simply forgetting to be grateful for all that we have. Provision, protection, family, friends, salvation, life itself are all blessings. And when we live a life centered around Christ and seeking him first, Scripture tells us in Matthew 6:33, like we mentioned above, that God will take care of all of our needs. Those are basic reasons to be grateful.

However, if you meditate on those things and still feel discouraged or discontent along your homesteading journey, we totally get it! That’s a time for more prayer, Bible reading, worship, and maybe even re-examining goals to make sure they align with God’s will. Also, you can even ask God to open your eyes to more wonders around you to be grateful for.

Maybe you’ll start viewing the intelligent way God made your bee colony as a blessing. Maybe God will give you a new level of gratitude for your livestock and the amazing health benefits of the food they provide you. (This happened to me when I researched the health benefits of raw honey!) God knows exactly what you need to see and think about to be encouraged.

    6. Give glory to God

This point is closely tied with being grateful. However, giving glory to God is more about giving God the credit when things grow or go well, when there is abundant provision, when an animal is healed, and the like. A homestead that is centered around Christ and is God-honoring is going to be a homestead that thrives with abundance because God will be faithful to always lead well when we listen and obey. So, whatever we are asking God to help us with, what choices to make, or how to do something, He will lead well and the success is all because of Him and for Him.

Another part of giving glory to God is sharing with others how God has come through for us. It is important as Christ followers to share our testimonies with others so that they can see God’s love and light. We never want to deny God the glory He deserves! We want to make sure God gets the glory He deserves, and that also helps us stay grateful!

    7. Point out the miracles of how God made nature

This point may seem like the least obvious, but it is just as important tying into being grateful and giving glory to God. Sometimes it can be so powerful for our moods and atmosphere to stop and think about the miracles of how God made nature. Have you ever stopped and watched the flight patterns of bees coming in and going out of their hive? I think that’s where people learned to create safe air traffic at airports. Bees are genius.

Have you ever thought about how God created seeds with a protective seed coat that is removed as the seed begins to sprout? Even the fact that most animals instinctively know what they should and should not eat, how they birth and take care of their young, how some animals migrate for the seasons. The natural bloom on a freshly laid egg for protection and preservation.

I am amazed when I stop and think about the wonders of real God-given food like raw honey and its powerful health benefits. Raw milk has amazing properties for gut health. The tops of carrots and other root vegetables are super high in nutrients and SHOULD be consumed, not wasted! There are so many wonders of God in the world, but we all are blessed to be able to witness God’s wonders every day on our homesteads and in our family.

Create a Christ-centered Homestead and Live Abundantly

These things seem simple, yet they are not always easy to just start and remember all of the time. Just like our walk with Christ, there are things that take intentional practice to become good habits. But, we believe that all of these things can become natural, good habits with practice and can help lead to creating a Christ-centered homestead. A Christ-centered homestead is one that honors God and will flourish with abundance. In that, we can live more abundantly! I love this post. Thank you for sharing. So many times as a homesteader, or anyone in agriculture, it’s crazy busy. I’ve often worried more about my to-do list than dedicating my work to the Lord. Thank you for this reminder.

I have been there too! It’s so easy to worry about the to-do lists and let that lead us. But, we know the Lord can lead us better. I have to remind myself all the time! I am so glad that this was a reminder for you and a post you enjoyed! It had been on my heart a while.

Love this post! Really encompasses the spirit of Colossians 3:23-24: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

So then, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

So many people don’t see the importance of including God in our day to day lives. But God IS our day to day life. Or should be. When we keep Him as our central focus and give Him the glory, everything else works itself out.
